Highlights of the Day:
Welcome back grade one! Today, we got to "act like teachers" and assess some writing samples using our writing target. We looked at spelling and conventions, as well as clarity of ideas and sentence organization! We then had some time to write on our own, and I was so impressed by how many students used what we discussed to improve their writing! After recess, we had some fun building words and playing a new tag game called "Survivor Ball" in phys. ed.! After lunch, we had a grade one superstorm around our field trip tomorrow! We then used the Cuisenaire rods to explore inverse relationships (also called "Fact Families"). For example: If I know that 8 + 2 = 10, then I also know that 2 + 8 = 10! We finished the day with a story from Miss Purkiss about changing a "badattude" into gratitude!
Field Trip:
Reminder that we are going to the Grain Academy and Stampede Art Walk tomorrow. Please dress according to the weather: sunscreen, hat, water bottle, lunch, snacks, good walking shoes, and bring a back pack as the students will need something to carry all the above items in as well as their visual journals and pencils.
The families of Beacon Hill School in Fort McMurray have lost everything. Their principal, Garrett Tebay and her librarian, have asked for our support. They would like to help their families rebuild their home libraries. Prince of Wales can help!! Clean out your bookshelves, order some new books from Scholastic or stop by your local bookstore. Please drop off NEW or Gently Used books at the school. Mrs. Tebay will pick them up when she is in Calgary and deliver them. Thank you for your help!
Gum in Room 8:
We have allowed "thinking gum" in the classroom to be used as a focussing tool during quiet work times, but we are finding that it is being a distraction to the learning process in the classroom. We are requesting that gum be left at home from now on.
Please and Thank You / Volunteer Opportunities:
- We would love to have morning reading volunteers to share books with students one-on-one, from 8:30-9:00 any day that it works for you!
1) We would gratefully welcome 4 volunteers to join us on a Suburban Community Tour around our school's neighborhood on Monday, June 6.
2) The grade one Urban Community Tour will be on Tuesday, June 14. This is a while away, but we are hoping for 10-12 volunteers to make it as smooth an experience as possible. It is always a highlight for grade one students and parents, so we hope you can join us!
Library:
Our Library day is Thursday, and many of our students have books out that are long overdue! Please remember to bring back any books that have been taken out of the Library for next Thursday (remember, you can renew books you really want to keep reading!). Thank you!
Mail Pockets:
- No new mail today.
- Home Reading bags went home if returned.
Upcoming Dates:
Daily Challenge:
Today we explored the inverse relationships between the numbers 8, 2, and 10. Can you name another three numbers and some of their inverse relationships?
