Highlights of the Day:
We began our day with a word wall challenge: I secretly added nine new words to our word wall, and we raced in pairs to see if we could find all nine! We then learned about the "ou" and "ow" sound chunks. The letter "o" is usually a cool letter, that is unless it is next to "w" or "u"-- then it becomes quite rude! It pinches "u" and "w" making the sound "ow!" (as in "cow" or "proud"). We also learned about a new word family, the "-ig" family and brainstormed some words that end in "ig" (e.g. pig, wig, dig, twig, etc.). After recess, we had Literacy Centres, followed by phys ed. After lunch, we had free centres, and then played the math game "Race to 100!". One of our classmates had a birthday over the weekend, and brought in some Rice Krispies Squares to share as a treat! However, she was unsure if she had enough for everyone, so the class helped her figure out how many she would need (1 for each student in the class + 1 for the teacher - missing/absent students). After realizing we needed 20, the class then estimated how many they thought there were by counting the top and bottom layers (which were visible through the clear container). We then passed around the treat (there were enough!) and had 7 left over. Another student suggested we could try cutting each in half (so everyone could have another piece) and so we used whiteboards and pictures to see if that would work. We then tried the same method to see if cutting each piece into three would give us enough (since cutting in half would only have given us 14).
Ask your child-- would we have had enough?
Please and Thank You / Volunteer Opportunities:
- We would love to have morning reading volunteers to share books with students one-on-one, from 8:30-9:00 any day that it works for you!
- We would very much appreciate volunteers during literacy centers: Tuesday and Thursday from 10:45 - 11:30, and Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 - 9:30. Thanks for considering!
Byblo’s Visit – Feb. 25th
On February 25, we will be having an exciting presentation on nutrition by FoodImpact c/o Byblos Bakery that discusses the importance of healthy eating. The Bakery will kindly supply the pita bread for the children to make their own healthy pita snack, as well as pitas for the students to take home to enjoy with their families. Please be sure to pack a lunch for your children as the food eaten in the presentation is only a snack.
We will be looking for donations of fillings like, shredded lettuce, slices of/diced tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, meats/sausages, shredded cheese, jam, etc. We will be coming up with a more comprehensive list as we talk about healthy foods that can be put in a pita pocket. I do ask that we do not bring in Nutella or peanut butter due to allergy precautions.
Mail Pockets:
- No new mail went home, so mail pockets stayed at school.
- Home Reading bags went home if returned.
Upcoming Dates:
- Feb. 25 – Byblo's Visit
- Mar. 2 – Fun Lunch – Booster Juice
- Mar. 16 – Fun Lunch – Taco Time
- Mar. 18 – PD Day – NO SCHOOL
- Mar. 21-28 – Spring Break – NO SCHOOL
Daily Challenge:
We had a lot of fun today figuring out how many Rice Krispies Squares we would need so each of our classmates could have one. If we had ended up with 12 extra pieces (instead of 7), how could we have cut them so we would have enough for everyone? (remember: drawing a picture is a great strategy!)
*Challenge question: How many would we have left after dividing them? What do you think we should do with the extras?
