Highlights of the Day:
I was so impressed by the number of students who came to school wearing pink shirts today! I love being a part of such a caring community! We began our day with Literacy Centres, after which we talked about how mathematicians love efficiency (doing things in the quickest and easiest way possible to solve the problem) and how we can be efficient when counting things by grouping them (e.g. putting things in 5's and 10's). After recess, we had music (where we got to listen to the entire score for Peter and the Wolf!) followed by phys ed. After lunch, we practiced what we would do if we ever had a lockdown (and what to do if you are not in the classroom), after which we had free centres. We finished the day with a visit from Ms. Purkiss, who talked to us about strategies we can use to help calm us down when we are angry!
Please and Thank You / Volunteer Opportunities:
- We would love to have morning reading volunteers to share books with students one-on-one, from 8:30-9:00 any day that it works for you!
- We would very much appreciate volunteers during literacy centers: Tuesday and Thursday from 10:45 - 11:30, and Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 - 9:30. Thanks for considering!
Byblo’s Visit – Tomorrow!
Tomorrow, we will be having an exciting presentation on nutrition by FoodImpact c/o Byblos Bakery that discusses the importance of healthy eating. The Bakery will kindly supply the pita bread for the children to make their own healthy pita snack, as well as pitas for the students to take home to enjoy with their families. Please be sure to pack a lunch for your children as the food eaten in the presentation is only a snack.
We will be looking for donations of fillings like, shredded lettuce, slices of/diced tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, meats/sausages, shredded cheese, jam, etc. We will be coming up with a more comprehensive list as we talk about healthy foods that can be put in a pita pocket. I do ask that we do not bring in Nutella or peanut butter due to allergy precautions.
Winterfest:
The Parkland Community Association will be hosting a Winterfest Celebration this Saturday, February 27th from 12-2PM. Bring the whole family down for some great activities including mini golf, petting zoo, crafts, games, and face painting. This is a free event that is being offered by the Parkland Community Association, and you do not have to be a Parkland resident to attend! While you’re there, come in and register your child for U6-U12 soccer. We will also be accepting non-perishable items for the local food bank.
FYI - Soccer is also open to nonresidents of Parkland.

Hope to see you there!
